an editorial: As Squid says in today’s comic, I’ve been hearing the stories for years: Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many others before George Floyd. My heart has grieved as our judicial system has repeatedly denied justice to black victims in order to protect their white oppressors. I join the crowd saying “black lives matter,” not because I value their lives over other lives, but because our institutions have historically sent the message that black lives don’t matter, and that has to change. As difficult as this cultural moment is, exacerbated by a global pandemic, I’m actually incredibly encouraged right now, because it appears we’ve finally hit the tipping point that we should’ve hit so long ago.
